02How to play
You run up a Midtown avenue automatically. Dodge the crowd, the furniture and the traffic.
| Move | Arrow keys or A / D, or press and drag. |
| Stop | Hold ↓ / S, drag down below your runner, or hold the right mouse button. This is how you let an ambulance pass. |
| Hop the turnstile | SPACE, a quick tap, or a swipe up. Only works underground. |
| Pause, mute, calm | P / ESC, M or the ♪ button, C or the ✦ button. |
The full rules, including exactly how scoring works, are on the rules of the street page.
03Common questions
| There's no sound | Check the ♪ button (or press M): mute is remembered between visits. Sound starts after your first tap or key press, because browsers don't allow a page to play audio before that. Also check your device volume. |
| Too much shaking or flashing | Tap ✦ or press C for reduced motion. The game follows your device's reduce-motion setting until you choose, and remembers your choice. |
| Does it work offline? | Yes. After the first time it loads with a connection, the web version keeps its files on your device and starts without one, subway included. |
| Play the same run again | Every run has a seed, shown on the game-over card. Tap it to copy a link that replays the same avenue, or add ?seed= and the seed to the game's address. |
| Reset my best score | Your best score is kept only on your device. Clear this site's data in your browser settings (or reinstall the app) to start over. That also resets the sound, motion and tip settings. |
| The game won't start | If a message says the game couldn't load, check your connection and use the retry button. Very old browsers may not be able to run it. |
| My data | Midtown Dash collects nothing. See the privacy policy. |
